
Bags do not fail randomly. They fail at the strap anchor, at the zip, at the base corner, and at the seam that takes the load. Every one of those is visible before you buy, if you know where to look. Here is the checklist, in the order the failures actually happen.
This is where most bags die. Look at where the shoulder strap meets the body. You want to see either a rivet through a reinforcement patch, or a rectangle of stitching with a cross through it — the "box-X" pattern that spreads the load across the whole rectangle instead of concentrating it on one line of thread.
A strap stitched on with a single straight line, with no patch behind it, will tear the fabric before the thread breaks. If a product photo does not show the anchor, ask for one. A maker who is proud of the construction will send it.
A bar tack is a dense block of stitching, usually 5 to 10 mm long, placed where a seam takes a sudden pull — the top of a pocket opening, the base of a handle, the end of a zip. They cost the maker seconds and they are the difference between a pocket that stretches and a pocket that tears open.
Count them. A bag with bar tacks at every pocket mouth was built by someone who has seen bags come back.
Eight to ten stitches per inch is the working range for bag weight material. Fewer than that and the seam is doing less work per centimetre; many more and you are perforating the material, which weakens it. You cannot count stitches in a photograph, but you can see whether the line wanders. Wandering stitching means a rushed operator, and a rushed operator skips bar tacks too.
Zips are the most-used moving part on a bag and the most common warranty complaint in the industry. Three things tell you what you are getting:
Look at the raw edges of the material inside the bag. On a good bag they are bound with tape, folded under, or — on leather — burnished and sealed. On a cheap one they are cut and left, and within a year they fray, then the seam next to them starts to let go.
This is the single fastest way to judge a bag from the inside in five seconds.
An unlined bag is not automatically bad — some designs are deliberately raw. But a lining does two jobs: it covers the seam allowances so they cannot be snagged and pulled, and it gives the bag a second layer to fail before your things fall out. A lining that is a thin, shiny, loose-woven fabric is doing neither.
Buckles, D-rings, sliders and feet. Solid metal outlasts plated zinc alloy, which outlasts plastic. The test in a photograph is thickness — a D-ring made from thin wire will bend open under a shock load, and once it opens the strap comes off. Stainless steel does not rust, which matters in a humid climate more than it does in a dry one.
Metal feet on the base of a duffle are a small detail that adds years, because the base stops being the wear surface.
Turn the bag over. The base takes every set-down, every dragged corner and all the weight. On a well-made bag it is a separate panel, often in a heavier material, seamed up the sides rather than folded around the corner. On a cheap one it is the same panel as the sides with a fold, and the fold is where it splits.
In your hands, the order is: turn it over, look at the base; look inside at the edges; work the zip once with one hand; pull firmly on the strap anchor.
